The scientist working in the Physical Intelligence Department at the Max Planck Institute for Intelligent Systems in Stuttgart will be supported by the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation for two years to continue his soft robotic research in Germany.
Stuttgart-Dr. Mingchao Zhang works on the 3D fabrications of various stimuli-responsive materials that show dynamic properties at the nano/microscale. During his Ph.D. period at the Department of Chemistry at Tsinghua University, he focused on the advanced manufacturing of carbon nanomaterials for functional devices. In his fourth year of the Ph.D. program, Zhang joined the Physical Intelligence Department at the Max Planck Institute for Intelligent Systems (MPI-IS) in Stuttgart as a visiting Ph.D. student for three months. After he graduated from Tsinghua, Zhang joined the MPI-IS in Stuttgart again with the support of a two-year Humboldt Research Fellowship for postdoctoral research.
“It is a pleasure to work here again in MPI-IS, and doing research in this top-notch group led by Prof. Metin Sitti is always a great honor for me. I am looking forward to contributing to the development of soft robotics based on my experience in the advanced fabrication of smart materials,” says Zhang.
“Mingchao has a good knowledge of developing various intelligent materials, and I believe his experience will help make more exciting progress in the soft robotics field,” says Sitti.
Each year, the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation grants approximately 500 fellowships to postdoctoral researchers of all nationalities and disciplines from abroad. They must have above-average qualifications, be at the beginning of their academic career, and have only completed their doctorate in the past four years. A Humboldt Research Fellowship for postdoctoral researchers allows the awardee to carry out long-term research of six months to two years in Germany. Applicants choose their own topic of research and their academic host.
